We conduct those strikes because they are necessary to mitigate ongoing actual threats, to stop plots, prevent future attacks and, again, save American lives. These strikes are legal, they are ethical and they are wise.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney • Speaking on a recent Justice Department memo made public, asserting the government’s right to target citizens for drone strikes if it’s deemed they’ve been involved in attacks against the United States, circumventing the due process of law that Americans are traditionally Constitutionally entitled to. The memo itself seems to strive for a standard under which the U.S. drone killing of Anwar al-Awlaki, for example, a U.S. citizen suspected of terrorist activity when he was slain in Yemen, would be considered legal. This is an interesting policy area for the odd political bedfellows it draws together, as both left and right wing criticisms of the targeted killing program are prevalent, and President Obama’s nominee to head the CIA, his 1st term counterterrorism chief John Brennan, has a Senate confirmation ahead of him. Brennan in his old job was a central figure in the U.S. drone program, and as such we’d anticipate even some bipartisan congressional grilling on this topic during his hearing. source (via shortformblog)

Make sure to read everything about this Justice Department memo on killing American citizens in other countries with drones, because it is sketchy as fuck. That is a flippant way of saying it should maybe scare you shitless.

Here’s the big question before the country and the world and the State Department after the last eight years: Can a man actually run the State Department? …As the saying goes, I have big heels to fill.
  • John Kerry, kicking off his first day at work as the new U.S. Secretary of State, after his two predecessors, Hillary Clinton and Condoleeza Rice. Well done, sir.  (via changetheratio)

White House Offers Compromise on Contraceptives Coverage

Under the policy proposed Friday, self-insured plans opting out of contraceptive coverage would notify the company that administers their health benefits. That third-party administrator would then be responsible for arranging “separate individual health insurance policies for contraceptive coverage from an issuer providing such polices.”

I don’t particularly care about what the ACA meant for institutions that would rather pay a fine/go to court than offer their employees full coverage, but I care a lot about what would happen to the employees of those companies. This compromise - if accepted by those organizations that opposed the mandate - is a very good thing for that reason alone.

Chris Christie vetoes minimum wage increase

herblondness:

Really trying to lock down 2016, by hitting hourly workers where it hurts the most.

Right. When people think he’s a moderate and a great guy — there’s this.

Aw, Christie, for the love of God.

A bipartisan group of senators has agreed on a set of principles for a sweeping overhaul of the immigration system, including a pathway to American citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants that would hinge on progress in securing the borders and ensuring that foreigners leave the country when their visas expire.

The senators were able to reach a deal by incorporating the Democrats’ insistence on a single comprehensive bill that would not deny eventual citizenship to illegal immigrants, with Republican demands that strong border and interior enforcement had to be clearly in place before Congress could consider legal status for illegal immigrants.

Their blueprint, set to be unveiled on Monday, will allow them to stake out their position one day before President Obama outlines his immigration proposals in a speech on Tuesday in Las Vegas, in the opening moves of what lawmakers expect will be a protracted and contentious debate in Congress this year.

Lawmakers said they were optimistic that the political mood had changed since a similar effort collapsed in acrimony in 2010. Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona and one of the negotiators, said he saw “a new appreciation” among Republicans of the need for an overhaul.

“Look at the last election,” Mr. McCain said Sunday morning on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos.” “We are losing dramatically the Hispanic vote, which we think should be ours.” The senator also said he had seen “significant improvements” in border enforcement, although “we’ve still got a ways to go.”

He added, “We can’t go on forever with 11 million people living in this country in the shadows in an illegal status.”

The New York Times, “Senators Offer a Bipartisan Blueprint for Immigration.”
